IDP Profile: Quinnen Williams

Player profile of New York Jets’ Quinnen Williams’ in IDP fantasy football leagues.

Quinnen Williams‘ rookie season was considered a disappointment by many. The third overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft didn’t live up to expectations, as he recorded 2.5 sacks, 28 tackles, and only four TFL’s in 13 games.

For fantasy football purposes, he wasn’t a factor at all despite being selected early in many IDP drafts.

Forutunately for Q, 2020 would bring about different results. In another 13 game season, Quinnen would essentially double all of his tackle totals, while adding 7.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.

His production in fantasy football increased as well, being the #6 DL player through the first 15 weeks of the season (he would miss the final two games of the year). Even better for fantasy football owners is how he ended the season, finishing as the #3 DL player in IDP leagues from weeks 11-15.

Considering how well he played this year, the question arises whether or not he’s able to sustain that success going forward. Personally, I think he can, and perhaps even be better in the following seasons.

This off-season the New York Jets hired Robert Saleh to be their new head coach. For those who aren’t aware, Saleh performed miracles in San Francisco this past year. The 49ers finished 6-10 on the season and were plagued with injuries to their key starters for a majority of the year. Despite this, Saleh led his unit to a 9th place overall defensive grading per PFF.

What does this have to do with Quinnen Williams?

Saleh brings out the best in players. He made Kerry Hyder Jr relevant again in fantasy football; thrusting him into the starting position as Hyder would finish 19th for DL in IDP this season. In 2019, Hyder was ranked 166th in the same category playing for the Dallas Cowboys, despite appearing in all 16 games that year.

He was so bad that even Quinnen Williams was ranked ahead of him which, as we’ve already addressed above, is pretty astounding considering how bad of a start Williams had in his inaugural season.

Quinnen Williams will play the same position Kerry Hyder Jr played in San Francisco. The difference is that Williams has already shown to be a much better player at this point in their careers, and given the scheme Saleh runs it should allow Williams to wreak havoc on opposing offenses.

Even better still is that if the team decides to get another edge rusher, it only bolsters the impact Williams will have; as John Franklin-Myers (who had more pressures than Williams this year) adds another component for opposing offenses to look at, enabling more opportunity for Williams.

As Quinnen Williams matures and is led by one of the greatest defensive minds in the NFL, his numbers should only continue to go up.

As of right now I have Q slated as the #2 interior defensive lineman in IDP formats, only behind Aaron Donald. He also should be a top-15 play once again overall for DL’s.

At the moment you can get him for a steal as well. The Alabama product is only owned in about 5-10% of fantasy football leagues, and given a disrespectful ranking of 50+ by ‘experts’ in dynasty formats.

Stay ahead of your league-mates and buy Quinnen Williams before it’s too late.
